Coming soon to Arts on the Lake

A seven session Zoom virtual lecture class with Alex Shundi

Drawing on his extensive knowledge as a internationally known painter and teacher, Alex Shundi brings his unique perspective and keen insight to this exploration of "primitive" influences in modern art, from 1860 to today.

Shundi explains the class this way:

"As the world shrank into a general communion given the impact of the industrial revolution’s communicative and mobile inventions, artists were exposed to what was previously termed as “primitive art” (a term implying lack of sophistication and progress), and were amazed and stimulated into interpreting the term as its original meaning: Primitive is “Primo”, FIRST. We have all been there, we have it in our veins and brain, out heart and soul, it is in our DNA. It is the spring of our existence.

So, modernity adopted its “primal” power and mystic expression, and re-introduced it to out conscious, inventing in tandem methods and ISMS to better express the soul of the human condition, and adding its power to current art concerns.

Artists like Picasso, Gauguin, Modigliani, Matisse, O’Keefe, Ernst, Leger, and hundreds of others were greatly inspired and created amazingly interesting and profoundly meaningful art by its exploration.

Impressionism, Fauvism, Cubism , Surrealism, Expressionism, and dozens of “movements” that served to celebrate and express modernity owe a great deal to ancient, tribal, and shamanistic art. Not mystery solved, but mystery accepted and embraced.

To understand this is to accept the timeless pursuit of our journey from birth to now, to perhaps better plan what comes next.

We will review and rediscover that marriage between who we were and who we are through an analysis of those magical moments of new understandings."

This seven session on-line Zoom series of 1 hour lectures begins January 4th 2021. Once you register you will receive the links for each session. We may schedule some double session evenings depending on the material needing to be covered.

The total for the entire series of classes is $90. Although the listing says you are paying only for the first session you are paying for all the slated sessions.
