A GREAT LOSS

Dear Friends,

This week we lost a dear friend and valued member of our Arts on the Lake Community. Steve Schreiber, beloved husband of Mary, passed away on Saturday from a battle with cancer. Steve was a special man with vast capabilities whose dynamic spirit was always excited and supportive of people through his positive attitude.

Through the years, he was involved in many events at the Art Center ranging from being a puppeteer and helping build stage sets, to playing music, and painting walls.  He was a brilliant musician, and he loved sharing his gifts with others. We will miss having him come bounding through the doors ready to jump into whatever is happening.

Mary has asked that any contributions in honor of Steve be given to The New Hampshire Music Festival. "Since Steve was a child, he spent time every summer in the White Mountains. He enjoyed hiking, biking, swimming, and relaxing and playing music on the porch of his family’s cottage...Support to this organization would reflect both his enjoyment of the mountains and his love of music."

You can go to the Support section on their website: http://www.nhmf.org/ and enter your information and Steve Schreiber in the Dedication Information section. You may also enter Mary's email (mschreiber59@gmail.com) if you would like her to know about your contribution.

She will also let us know when a date for a gathering to remember Steve will be set in the near future.

ELVIS MOVES ON

Screenwriter/Playwright Ron Hutchinson reports that AotL-developed Clinging to the Iceberg will be at the Tyneside Festival in Newcastle upon Tyne in England this October. And, as might be expected, there is serious in Jos Vantyler for Lookin’ for Trouble in London. Jos, while waiting to realize Elvis again, has been well-received in Two Noble Kinsmen and Love’s Labor’s Lost. This spring we expect that AotL will again be the site of a new Hutchinson work. He’s been developing a story on how forcibly-imported sparrows have flourished in the New World. Yes!

SHEARWOOD SHORT PLAY TO BE PART OF HVSF BAKE-OFF

The Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival announced this week that James Shearwood’s “The Return of the Clogged Sink” will be part of the 2018 Community Bake-Off readings on Saturday, August 4 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, August 5, at 2 pm at the Philipstown Depot Theatre in Garrison. This is the second year of the community writing event called a “Bake-Off” sponsored by the Shakespeare Festival. “There is always pride and pleasure coupled with anxiety in watching actors bring a new play to life,” said Shearwood, our Director of Theatrical Programing at AotL. Reservations to share that moment can be made here.

Can you Volunteer to Help with Summer Concert Series

Are you looking to be involved with a wonderful community event? Our Summer Concert Series has become a major attraction during July and we welcome anyone who can lend us a hand preparing for these concerts. There are many ways to contribute and we are meeting Wed 6/6 at 6 PM at the Center to talk about what needs to be done. Please join us if you can. If you can not attend please email office@artsonthelake.org and we will get back to you promptly.

Power is back On and Art Exhibition News

Power has been restored to the center so classes and activities will resume starting Monday.  Unfortunately we will be unable to hold the Spring Art Show.  There is no two week period on the calendar before August when both the center and the those who organize the exhibition were available. Artists who submitted their fees are welcome to have a refund, or we can credit it towards the entrance of work to the annual Fall Exhibition which is held in early October. Please see Exhibition web page for details.

Art Squared/Members Gathering Postponed

PLEASE NOTE:

Due to the fact that a large number of members, artists and guests are participating in this Saturday's marches in support of the seventeen students murdered in Parkland, Florida, we are postponing this weekend's Art Squared/Member's Gathering event to a date to be announced shortly.

Those artists who have turned in their works we will keep them until the show and for those who are planning to turn them in today (Tuesday March 20) please do so. We recognize that some may be inconvenienced by this change of dates.

TODAY 3/13 - Snow Cancellation

  • While we hoped we would escape today's storm, there is enough snow with resulting slickness that the parking lot and driveway are currently  very slippery. With the snow continuing into the morning and another few hours in the afternoon, we are going to postpone the Intensive Painting class today.
  • Tonight's rehearsal for The Birds scheduled for later tonight will not be impacted.
