Art and Culture Lecture - American Regionalism

Tuesday, March 4, at 7:00 pm

Coming soon to Arts on the Lake

24th Lecture Series by Alex Shundi on Art and Culture

American Regionalism

Shundi's Description of the class:

"This class will explore the different visions that define a specific esthetic that local environments and history reveal in American Art. It is based on the premise that esthetic trends and visions are affected by the local environments and histories of the region.

On of these is the Folklorism of rural and small town America which  crossed the boundaries of craft and morphed into art, as much that urban living and its world also attracted the interest of modern artists.

To an obvious degree, all art has elements of regionalism, regardless of geography or time. However, many artists found great inspiration and subject in the specifics of the territories that were limited to their life experiences.

In doing so, they encapsulated the soul of particular places: the forms, colors and atmospheres that grace specific landscapes and traditions, all describing the deep attachments and nostalgic sentiments of artists who lived there.

We will cover the painters, the places that they chose as inspiration, and the influence they had on modern art.

Although this class will be limited to America, some of the subjects covered will also include influences of methods and renditions that the regional artists picked up in their travels, and follow the many painters who went on beyond regionalism in time, always keeping the essence of it in their work."

-Alex Shundi
