Alex Shundi - Author Talk and Book Signing

Saturday, July 23, 2016 at 7:30 pm

Coming soon to Arts on the Lake

A book signing event to celebrate the first edition of Alexander Shundi’s illustrated book FS-8 Express, published by Tony Carretta with photographs by Robert La Marche. The evening will feature the artist and publisher presenting the book, as well as a conversation about making art, writing and publishing.

FS-8 Express presents eight artistic constructions that encompass 64 pieces created with mixed media. Depicting eight locomotives, their tenders and 48 wagons, each is a mini installation mounted on vintage roller skates.

“The trains all have a theme such as Incas, Surrealism, food, Venice, Futurism, politics, Hopi, and time, all of which cover the themes and interests that have been explored during the 72 years of my life-adventures and art making. Many of the subjects are homages and comments on artists and art movements (Picasso, Boccioni, Ernst, Saverini, Bourgeois, Du Champs, Morandi, Hirst, De Chirico, etc.) The idea has been conceived with a specific purpose: The use of the train as a metaphor for the follies, emotions, obsessions, and wonders of a life-lived, all wandering through this wonderful, cruel, strange universe of ours, in time. These little sculptures are conceived and presented with abundant humor and whimsy, acute observation, with ingenious inventiveness both in concept and in use of materials.”
-Alex Shundi

The book is being published by artist and director of the Newarts Gallery, Tony Carretta. He has also published a variety of books on artists and the art market, including Alexander Shundi’s book “The Lyrical Eye”.

The book would not have been possible without the photographs of Bob La Marche, who constructed a “photo-structure” in Shundi’s studio, specifically to perfectly illuminate and photograph the trains, a difficult undertaking given the size and complexity of the art-works.

The book-signing will be accompanied with a discussion by Mr. Shundi and Mr. Carretta, elaborating on the purpose and methods of the presented creations. There is no charge for the evening, but donations will be appreciated.
